Why We Love It
This natural indigo-dye noren curtain is hand-woven in the Awa Shoai Shijira Ori weaving style that originated in the 18th century. This particular weave produces a rare crepe effect that enhances its refined elegance.
Natural indigo dyed cotton from Awa, Tokushima, is one of the finest Japanese crafts. Awa natural indigo dye is extremely time-consuming to create involving complex hand dyeing, twisting and fermentation that is unique to the region.
Famously named Japan Blue, the indigo cotton hand-dyed here is extraordinarily vibrant and long lasting. Natural indigo is antibacterial, hypoallergenic, and is eco-friendly, created without the use of damaging chemicals. The unique shades of blue will become more distinct with every wash.
How To Use Your Noren
Noren may be used indoors to create a partition between kitchen and dining areas, bathroom and corridor, or between living and work spaces. Why not use a noren to enhance your shops or restaurants, as is customary in Japan? Noren can even be used as decorative wall hangings as they require little tools for installation.
